A recent post on /movies noted an interesting trend among headline writers for film news: ending their opinion article headlines with "and that's a good thing". I realized that I've noticed a similar trend among headlines in general--across every genre of news. I decided to do a little searching to see just how widespread this is, and...it's extreme. Every one of these articles is from 2018. I have a feeling the trend began a long time ago. Google Ngrams aggregates data from books, not web articles, but can provide a pretty good estimate for general language trends. Ngrams seems to indicate that "that's a good thing" has spiked since 1995. This graph only uses data through 2007. I suspect the trend has only gotten worse in the decade since.
Headline writers: please stop telling us how to feel.
My group of friends and I got onto the Jumbotron at the Kansas City/Cleveland baseball game tonight. One was shirtless, one was dancing, and the other was holding a sign advertising Dogecoin and Bitcoin. I was able to get a good video of the jumbo tron on my phone. Would anyone be able to make this video into a gif? Also, could anyone get this sent into deadspin? Maybe play dumb and say "here's a stupid fan shirtless etc..." Regardless, 25k people who probably didn't know about Doge/BTC saw it multiple times tonight!
